Matt Denney

Matt Denney is a London based bass trombonist, and member of the Band of the Grenadier Guards. A proud Lancashire lad he originates from Poulton-le-Fylde, which is where his love for music was initiated, playing in the local brass band.

In 2010 Matt moved to Manchester to study at the Royal Northern College of Music, gaining a BMus (Hons). Here he studied with the late, great Adrian ‘Benny’ Morris, Rob Holliday, Roger Cutts and Jiggs Whigham to name but a few, also getting his first taste of serious orchestral performance. During this time Matt was in demand in a wide range of settings and privileged to work with some incredible musicians. He was a founder member of a successful trombone quartet, having a busy recital schedule and diverse educational programme. He also initiated a passion for the contrabass trombone, performing for Christian Lindberg and commissioning a new work for the instrument by renowned composer Tom Harrold.

Matt now enjoys a variety of freelance work both as a bass trombonist and electric bassist. True to his northern roots and brass band background, Matt has performed with most of the major brass bands, previously being a member of both the Grimethorpe Colliery Band and Leyland Band. 

In 2017, he made the decision to join the military and is now based in Central London with the Band of the Grenadier Guards. Since then, Matt has been lucky enough to be involved in various significant state events, including the Funerals of both HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Philip, and was part of the stage orchestras for the Platinum Jubilee Concert and Coronation Concert. Matt is also proud to be a part of the British Army Jazz Orchestra, Guards Brass and the Guards Big Band.

Being an advocate of all things British, Matt is proud of his association with Rath Trombones (…despite being the wrong side of the Pennines!). They are without doubt the finest instrument available, with a wonderful, obliging team behind them.
