Dan is a Freelance musician who has played with some of the United Kingdom’s top Brass Bands and Orchestras.
Dan is both thrilled and proud to become a Rath Artist, having had his first Rath when he was 14 (R4F).
Dan was born and raised in Yorkshire and began playing trombone when he was 8 years old.
He was initially taught by his parents until 2006 when he joined the Elland Silver Youth Band and subsequently began lessons with Black Dyke euphonium legend Geoff Whitham. Dan enjoyed his lessons and quickly progressed through the ranks from Bass trombone to Principal trombone within a year. Dan was featured as a soloist on many occasions adding numerous instrumental and soloist prizes to his name including outstanding soloist at the National Youth Entertainment Championships in 2010.
After a brief spell in the Senior Band at Elland, Dan was invited to join the newly crowned Yorkshire Champions Rothwell Temperance Band. It was with Rothwell that Dan had his first taste of topflight banding. He enjoyed many contest performances with them, performing at the Royal Albert Hall, Symphony Hall and other prestigious venues.
During his time at Rothwell whilst 16, Dan was approached by Dr Brett Baker to be an inaugural member of the Black Dyke Youth Trombone Quartet along with three other talented young people from across the UK. This new group performed alongside The Black Dyke Band and regularly took part as guest performers at British Trombone Society days across the UK.
The quartet was twice a finalist in the National Festival of Music for Youth Chamber Category. In 2013 the quartet was invited to be guest artists at the Great American Brass Band Festival in Kentucky, where they performed alongside Brett Baker, Wycliffe Gordon and Scott Hartmann as well as taking part as clinicians for a wide range of participating amateur players.
Later that year, Dan left Rothwell Band to join the World Famous Brighouse and Rastrick Band where he played before heading North over the border to Glasgow to study trombone at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland under the guidance of Simon Johnson (BBCSSO).
Dan feels he was privileged to receive input from the wide range of excellent tutors and visiting international clinicians including Ian Bousfield at the RCS and as a result soon began working as a freelance trombonist, euphonium player and on bass trumpet in the orchestras in Scotland.
During his time in Glasgow, Dan was Principal Trombone with Scottish Champions Whitburn Band and both the National Youth Brass Band and National Youth Orchestra of Scotland.
He was principal trombone when this orchestra toured China and performed at the BBC Proms. Whilst at Whitburn Band Dan was crowned Scottish Youth Solo Champion with his rendition of Arthur Pryor’s “Bluebells of Scotland”.
Dan graduated with a Bachelor of Music Honours Degree and then with a Masters in 2018. He returned to Yorkshire to teach and continue his freelance career with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Northern Symphonia, Hallé Orchestra and Liverpool Philharmonic, whilst also deputising regularly with Brighouse and Rastrick, Black Dyke Band and Grimethorpe Colliery Band. Dan now plays with the City of Bradford Band with whom he is Principal trombone.
Dan has always had at least one Rath in his ‘armoury’ which now includes one of the first R11 Bb/Eb Altos, an R2 and the recent addition, his beloved R6.
