A fantastic afternoon of music making took place in London recently, during the Royal Air Force Music Services' Annual Soloist Competition at Regent Hall.
The event on October 23 was the culmination of months of preparation and hard work from the competing soloists and the prizewinning students on the Music Direction courses, with four soloists taking to the stage along with performances by the Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment, conducted by Wing Commander Richard Murray, Principal Director of Music (RAF).
Rath Trombones was delighted to sponsor the new Audience Award, and the winner was clarinetist, Air Specialist (Class 1) (AS1) Marrs, following his captivating performance of Sholem-Alekham, Rov Friedman! by Béla Kovács.
Such was the quality of AS1 Marrs' playing, he was also awarded the overall prize after impressing the adjudicating panel of Lieutenant Colonel Steve Green, Royal Marines Band Service; Lieutenant Colonel Lauren Petritz-Watts, Royal Corps of Army Music; Sam Jackson, controller of BBC Radio 3.
Mark Good, Rath group marketing manager, presented AS1 Marrs with the Rath Trombones Award and said: "The standard of playing at the RAF Music Services Annual Soloist Competition was sublime, with each of the finalists commanding the stage with their musical artistry.
"It was a pleasure for Rath Trombones to support this excellent event, and many congratulations to AS1 Marrs on his well-deserved award."
