Michael Rath Artist Series Deb Scott mouthpiece launched by Rath Trombones and Greg Black Mouthpieces

Rath Trombones has announced the launch of the new Artist Series Deb Scott mouthpiece, as part of an innovative collaboration with Greg Black Mouthpieces.

The mouthpiece was spearheaded by Texas-based Rath Artist Dr Deb Scott, and was launched by Rath Trombones at the 2026 International Trombone Festival in Riga, Latvia.

It is the first in the new Michael Rath Artist Series of mouthpieces, with more to follow.

Deb Scott is the professor of trombone at Stephen F Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. She is also director of the composers’ workshop for the International Trombone Festival. 

Reflecting on the new mouthpiece, Dr Deb Scott said: “I was really excited to learn that Greg Black had the tools from the old Giardinelli factory in New York City, specifically the Symphony T. I had always loved that mouthpiece - but it wasn’t quite right.

“Collaborating with Greg was amazing. I visited the shop and tried things out, then he would make tiny tweaks as we went along.

“The new Michael Rath Artist Series Deb Scott mouthpiece is perfect. It has a beautiful tone quality, and it really sings across the registers; I’m delighted with the outcome.”

Taking its inspiration from the Giardinelli Symphony T, the mouthpiece was made with the familiar Rath blank (exterior) and features the Michael Rath logo, along with an engraving of Deb’s name around the cup.

Greg Black, of Greg Black Mouthpieces, commented: “We first spoke to Deb at the Texas Music Educators Conference (TMEA) in San Antonio, and it has been a pleasure to collaborate with her and Rath Trombones with this new mouthpiece.

“During the process, we were able to welcome Deb to the shop and at one point, we were making tweaks by a couple of thousandths of an inch, so to be able to develop the mouthpiece and have that instant feedback was extremely helpful - and the final result is terrific.

“This mouthpiece really ensures players have all the necessary tools in their toolbox, while allowing them to be efficient about their playing.”
