Maarten Combrink joins the Rath Pack

Rath Trombones has welcomed Dutch jazz trombonist Maarten Combrink to its growing roster of Rath Artists.

Acclaimed performer Maarten is the solo-trombonist of the renowned Metropole Orkest. He gained recognition as a soloist after winning the ITA JJ Johnson and Carl Fontana jazz trombone competitions in the USA.

Maarten regularly performs with the Jasper Blom Bigband, Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, All Ellington, Peter Beets New Jazz Orchestra, Dutch Swing College Band and Gerardo Rosales.

Reflecting on his new role as a Rath Artist, Maarten said: “I have been playing a Rath trombone since I was 14 years old. That is why it makes me very happy to become a Rath Artist and to endorse their wonderful instruments.

“With my Rath trombone, I can easily get the sound I want and apply it across the whole register of the instrument. When I play Rath I feel my ideas flow freely and I am able to play and adapt to a diverse range of styles of music.”

With the Metropole Orkest, Maarten has played and recorded with Richard Bona, Avishai Cohen, Jacob Collier and Snarky Puppy.

As a bandleader, Maarten leads the Maarten Combrink Quintet, which is set to release its debut album in 2026. He is co-leader of trombone quartet Tinase, which won the Kai Winding Trombone Competition.

Maarten studied in Rotterdam and Amsterdam, recently completing his master’s degree with the highest possible distinction.

After his studies he spent three months in New York, where he took lessons from Marshall Gilkes, Elliot Mason and Steve Davis.

Maarten Combrink performs on a Rath Custom R2 with a yellow brass bell, slide, tuning slide and gooseneck.
