Carol Jarvis

Carol, originally from Newport Pagnell, graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music in 2001 with the highest qualifications possible; a 1st Class BMus honours degree and distinctions in both the Solo and Chamber Ensemble Professional Performance diplomas. During this time she also gained many awards including the brass prize, a jazz improvisation award and two major scholarships from the RNCM and also won the British Trombone Society/Jiggs Whigham scholarship to study jazz in America. Carol was also awarded the first ever ‘Brass Personality of the year award’ by the Brass Herald.

She is a busy freelance trombonist in all fields of the profession, having performed with the likes of the Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra, Opera North, BBC Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, Royal Ballet Sinfonia, Northern Ballet Theatre, D’Oyly Carte, Ulster Brass, RPO Brass, Psappha, Bournemouth Symphonic Brass and Ensemble 360. Carol has had numerous trials for positions with some of the UK’s leading orchestras and has also been invited on many tours including to Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic with the famous Fine Arts Brass Ensemble. Carol has recently been appointed as a member of the faculty at Trinity College of Music in London.

Aside from classical playing, additional performances alongside the likes of Brian May, Roger Taylor, Lulu, Victoria Beckham, Jamiroquai, Roger Daltrey, Julian Joseph, Des’ree, Jerry & The Pacemakers, Björn Again, The Hollies, Bob Geldof, the Honeyz, Kelly Osbourne, Suzi Quatro, Al Martino, David Gest, Ruth Madoc, Brenda Edwards (XFactor), John Dankworth, Cleo Laine, Jacqui Dankworth, Pete Conway, Urban Cookie Collective, Bonnie Langford, Michael Ball, NYJO, Clare Teal, Don Lusher, George Chisholm, Mark Nightingale, Guy Barker, Gerard Presencer, Julian Argüelles, Victor Mendoza, Bobby Shew, Duncan James (Blue), Marti Pellow, Peter Kay, Liz McClarnon (Atomic Kitten), Martine McCutcheon, David Hasselhoff, Claire Martin, the John Wilson Orchestra, and touring with Roy Wood have filled Carol’s diary. Her session work features on a number of commercial soundtracks to feature films, adverts and albums including Badly Drawn Boy’s “The Hour of Bewilderbeast” winning the ‘Technics Mercury Music Award’, a ‘Q Award’ and ‘Album of the Year’. Carol has featured on singles in the Top 10 UK charts several times and deps on numerous touring and West End Shows including Chicago, The Lion King, The Producers, The Rat Pack, Ray Charles and Spamalot.

Carol was a founder member of the acclaimed all-female trombone quartet Bones Apart and toured to over sixteen different countries and most of the states of the USA. They earned themselves international recognition having commissioned many new works for the trombone quartet and given over 15 World Premieres.

Carol has her arrangements published by Warwick Music and is not only on the Board of Advisors of the British Trombone Society but also a committee member for the International Trombone Week. Carol has been part of the audition panels at the RNCM and also judged International Trombone competitions on many occasions around the globe. Carol is well known for coaching and has given masterclasses throughout the world including Lucerne Conservatoire, University of California in Los Angeles, Rice University in Houston and most recently she was a professor of brass during a week-long course with the Youth Orchestra of Andalucia in Mollina, Málaga.

2007 has seen Carol involved in the recording of the Doctor Who soundtrack for the third BBC TV series, a second series of ITV’s ‘Soapstar Superstar’, playing Euphonium with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland in Dublin, performing with Bournemouth Symphonic Brass, touring with Opera North and playing at the 100 Club in London. In February and March this year Carol toured Africa playing trombone and singing backing vocals with Michael Bolton and has just completed a second tour with him all over Europe. Future work for Carol includes teaching PGCE students at the RNCM, coaching and conducting a World Premiere during a British Trombone Society Event and working with Onyx Brass, Bournemouth Symphony, BBC Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
